What Actually Happens During a First Telehealth Psychiatric Appointment?

A first appointment is mostly a conversation — not a test, and nothing you need to prepare a presentation for. Here’s roughly what to expect.

Before the visit

You’ll usually fill out intake forms ahead of time covering your basic history: current symptoms, past mental health treatment, medications you’ve tried, relevant medical history, and what’s bringing you in right now. Having this ready in advance means less of the actual appointment gets spent on paperwork and more on the conversation itself.

During the visit

The provider will ask about what’s going on, how long it’s been going on, and how it’s affecting your day-to-day life — work, relationships, sleep, energy, concentration. They’ll also ask about your history: past diagnoses, treatments that have or haven’t worked, family history, and any medications or substances that might be relevant. This is a two-way conversation, not an interrogation — it’s fine to ask questions back about what they’re thinking or why they’re asking something.

What comes out of it

By the end, you should have a working sense of what the provider thinks is going on, and a plan — which might mean starting a medication, a referral to therapy, further evaluation, or sometimes just a follow-up to see how things develop before deciding on treatment. It’s rarely a single definitive verdict in one visit; psychiatric care is usually iterative, with the plan adjusted as the provider gets to know you and how you respond.

What it doesn’t require
